On November 19th and 20th the Library and the Counseling Department collaborated on a lunchtime book chat about the graphic novel Guts by Raina Telgemeier. Students signed up in advance and received a copy of the book from the Library earlier in the month. During the first meeting, students joined Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Casey, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Lyons, Mrs. Steward, and Mrs. Hodge to rate the book, discuss favorite characters, and talk about the main character's experience with anxiety. Students and faculty/support staff talked about strategies for managing stress and anxiety.
During the second session of the book chat, things got creative! Mrs. Anderson set up a station called "Tips for Managing Stress and Anxiety" where students had the opportunity to participate in stress relieving activities including puzzles, drawing, coloring, using fidget toys, and other crafts. Students also made posters to display in Salk with advice on coping with anxiety and stress.
In December, we also invited parents to join us for a workshop to learn about middle school stressors and take home ideas for these years of growth and stability. We highlighted the book Guts and shared information about our Middle School 101 curriculum. Our discussion focused on “parenting through” these middle years and we provided parents with some tools and coping skills. Topics discussed include mindfulness, growth mindset, and breathing to ease anxiety. Please check out our resources and photos below!
It was a positive experience for all involved and we hope to offer more book chats and parent workshops in the future!
Do you have a topic relevant to middle school and raising adolescents that you would like to learn more about? We would love to offer more parent workshops on the issues that are important to our students and families. Please email email@example.com with suggestions or ideas! Please write "Parent Workshop Topic" in the subject line.
