Check out this great website that gives you access to 100’s of mindfulness activities ranging from guided mindfulness audio tracks, to videos on yoga and acupressure, and animated mindful games. Free for Teachers!
Please let us know if you have any students that could benefit from peer tutoring. The other counselors and I will talk with the kids and link them up with a HW Helper. Tutors are available Monday through Friday after school in the green cafeteria.
Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and the break!
We'd like to welcome Ms. Pasquale to the Salk Counseling Department! Ms. Pasquale is filling in for Ms. Steward and will be covering 7th grade.
After School Homework Help
Please encourage your children to stop by Guidance if they’d like to work with a Homework Helper for any subject! For Quarter 2 we’ve definitely had less students available to tutor compared to Q1, but we do have Helpers that are ready, willing, and able to work with your students. Stop by Guidance and we'll set you up with a tutor to help your child with HW and studying!
On Thursday, January 10th at 7pm, Ms. Lyons and Ms. Pasquale will hold a Parent Workshop for current 6th and 7th grade parents to explain the 7th and 8th grade curriculum. They will be reviewing sample 7th and 8th grade schedules and will discuss course options for both grades.
On Thursday, January 17th from 6:45 to 7:45, the following workshop is offered for parents during Harry Potter Night:
"Addressing Emotional Wellness in Middle School"- The school Social Workers are offering an evening workshop and will be presenting about their classroom workshops held in each grade that raise emotional awareness and offer tools for building coping skills. Parents are invited to come learn about the tips and strategies that can help their children strengthen their emotional skills through the middle school years.
6th Grade News
On January 15th and 16th, Ms. Lyons will be pushing into 6th grade classes (class/periods to be determined) with the laptop cart. 6th graders will use the laptops to log-on to the Powerschool Student/Parent Portal and will choose their Foreign Language class for 7th grade.
7th Grade News
On January 22nd and 24th, Ms. Pasquale will be pushing into 7th grade classes (class/periods to be determined) with the lap top cart. 7th graders will use the laptops to log-on to the Powerschool Student/Parent Portal to choose their 8th grade electives (either Art or Music).
8th grade News
Scheduling meetings continue through January 25. Students and parents have been meeting with their counselor to review their 9th grade schedule and choose their electives. In addition, there was an 8th Grade Transition Workshop for parents at LMEC last night, presented by the High School Guidance Chairs.
Transition meetings have been scheduled for late January into early February. These meetings are similar to the Guidance meetings and students will go over their schedule and choose their electives.
College Awareness Week 2019
College Awareness week will be the week of March 4th. Stay tuned for more details on activities and events for that week!
After School Homework Help
Please encourage your children to stop by the green cafeteria any day after school for assistance with HW or studying. Each day we have 7-10 bright and motivated students ready to help, so please utilize this helpful (and free!) resource!
Do you find that your child arrives at Extra Help not knowing what they need help with? Feel free to print and share our Extra Help Checklist with your students (link to print at bottom of this post). We included some “instructions” along with the checklist.
6th Grade News
This week wraps up the 5-week push-in program for 6th graders, Middle School 101. Over the last few weeks, Mrs. Lyons, Mrs. Miceli, and Mrs. Williams have been working with the entire 6th grade class in small groups on a variety of interesting and helpful topics. Topics covered include Growth Mindset, learning about the brain and emotions, and lessons on kindness. Additionally 6th graders worked on an anchor activity to ground and calm themselves, as well as lessons on time management and organization. 6th graders hopefully now have a great "toolbox" of skills and strategies to have a successful year!
7th Grade News
We are working on planning some fun and interesting college and career awareness activities for March! More information to follow!
8th Grade News
Parents/Guardians of 8th grade students received letters this week regarding scheduling for 9th grade. Students and Parents have the option to meet with their Counselor to go over required courses, electives, and graduation requirements. These 20 minute meetings will take place from December 3 through January 25. Students may be called to Guidance during some classes depending on the time his/her parent schedules their meeting.
8th grade students will also have an assembly (date to be determined) to review the 9th grade scheduling process.
There will be an 8th Grade Transition Workshop for parents at LMEC at 7pm on January 3rd, presented by the High School Chairs.
